How to Print a Leather Pattern at Home Without Ruining the Scale (A4, US Letter and Legal)

Print at 100%. Not "Fit to page", not "Shrink to fit". 100%, or "Actual size". That one setting is why most home-printed patterns come out slightly small, and slightly small is enough to stop your stitching holes lining up by the third panel.

Why it happens

Printer drivers default to fitting the page inside a printable margin, so they shrink it by 3 to 6 percent. On a 40 cm panel that is over a centimetre, and the error repeats on every panel until the front and back no longer meet. The pattern is not wrong. The scale is.

Print the test page first

Every pattern includes a test page with a 5 cm square and a 2 inch square on it.

• Set the printer to 100% or Actual size. Turn off Fit to page and Auto rotate and centre.

• Print that one page.

• Measure both squares with a steel ruler.

• If they measure correctly, print the rest. If not, fix the setting and print the test page again.

One sheet of paper is cheaper than leather cut to the wrong size.

Use the right paper edition

A4 is 210 x 297 mm, US Letter is 216 x 279 mm, US Legal is 216 x 356 mm. Every pattern download includes all three, already re-tiled for that size. Open the one that matches the paper in your tray and ignore the other two. There is nothing to convert.

Tape without losing the scale

Trim each sheet on the dashed line, right and bottom only. Overlap the next sheet onto that trimmed edge and match the printed borders, not the paper edges. Tape on the back so the marks stay visible. Measure the 5 cm square once more when the whole pattern is assembled.

If the holes still do not line up

• Short in one direction only: the printer's paper size does not match what is in the tray. Fix that, not the scale.

• Squares correct but panels do not meet: you trimmed the paper edge instead of the dashed line.

• Everything measures right but the leather is off: leather stretches. Cut matching panels with the grain running the same way.
