How to Start Leathercraft for Under $100 (Tools, Leather and Your First Pattern)
You can start leathercraft for under 100 dollars, and finish a real wallet in your first week. The split is roughly 50 to 60 dollars on six hand tools, 20 to 30 on a small piece of leather, and under 10 on a pattern that comes with a free video tutorial.
The trick is not buying a 40 piece starter kit. Most of it goes unused. Below is the list of what you actually need for a first wallet, pouch or flat cap, what it costs at a typical leather supplier, and the things you can leave on the shelf until your third or fourth project. Prices are typical ranges as of 2026 and vary by country, so treat them as a guide, not a quote.
The six tools you need (about $50 to $60)
A sharp knife. A utility knife with snap off blades is fine, around 5 to 10 dollars. You do not need a round knife yet.
A stitching chisel or diamond hole punch, 4 mm spacing, 2 prong and 4 prong or a single 6 prong. 10 to 20 dollars. This is what makes your stitches even.
Two harness needles, blunt tipped, size 002 or similar. 2 to 5 dollars for a pack.
Waxed polyester thread, 0.8 or 1 mm. 5 to 10 dollars for a spool that lasts for many projects.
A mallet, nylon or rawhide, for driving the chisel. 10 to 15 dollars. A wooden one from the hardware shop works.
A steel ruler and a cutting mat. 10 dollars together, and you may already have both.
That is the whole kit for a wallet or a cap. Contact cement, an edge beveller and a slicker are nice, not necessary, and can wait.
The leather (about $20 to $30)
Do not buy a whole side. Buy a small panel or an offcut bundle. For a first wallet you need less than half a square foot of 2 to 4 oz veg tan leather. For a flat cap, around 3 to 4 square feet of 2 to 3 oz. Offcut bundles from tanneries and suppliers are the cheapest way to get good leather in small amounts, and mistakes on offcuts cost nothing.
One ounce is roughly 0.4 mm. Wallets want 2 to 4 oz, hats 2 to 3 oz, bags 4 to 7 oz. The full table by project is in what leather thickness do you actually need.
The pattern (free, or under $10)
Start with a free one. The free stuff page on leather-patterns.com has a leather pouch, a pin cushion and a shoulder strap pattern, all free PDF downloads. Print the pouch at 100 percent, cut it from an offcut, stitch it. That is your first project and it costs nothing beyond the tools.
Then buy one paid pattern. Most single PDF patterns on leather-patterns.com are under 10 euros, and wallet patterns are among the cheapest. Every one includes real size pattern pieces, pre-marked stitching holes, printing instructions, and a link to the free step by step video tutorial on the Tony See Patterns YouTube channel. The DIY Leather Wallet Pattern or the Starter Duo set of two wallets are the usual first buys. If you would rather make something to wear, the 7 panel flat cap is the beginner friendly hat and comes in ten sizes.
Three or more patterns in one order get an automatic 15 percent discount at checkout on leather-patterns.com.
A sample first budget
Knife 8, stitching chisel 15, needles 3, thread 8, mallet 12, ruler and mat 10. That is 56 dollars on tools. Add 25 dollars for a veg tan offcut bundle and about 8 dollars for a wallet pattern. Total around 89 dollars, and you have everything for the first three or four projects, because the tools, the thread and most of the leather carry over.
What not to buy yet
A big starter kit. Half the tools in it are for tooling and stamping, which you will not do on a wallet.
A round head knife. Beautiful, expensive, and needs sharpening skills you do not have yet.
A sewing machine. Everything on leather-patterns.com is designed for hand stitching, and the tutorials show the saddle stitch.
Dyes and finishes. Start with pre dyed or natural veg tan and finish it later once the stitching is right.
A laser cutter. If you already own one, the SVG and DXF patterns are for you. If not, a knife and a printed PDF is how most makers start.
Printing without wasting paper
Every Tony See PDF pattern includes a test page with a 5 cm and 2 inch square. Print that page alone first, measure the square, then print the rest at 100 percent, Actual Size, never Fit to Page. Pick the A4, US Letter or US Legal edition that matches your printer paper. All three are in the download. The details are in how to print a leather pattern at home.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really start leathercraft for under 100 dollars? Yes, if you buy six tools and an offcut instead of a kit and a side. The sample budget above lands under 90.
What is the cheapest first project? The free pouch pattern from leather-patterns.com, cut from an offcut. After that, a card wallet.
Do I need to buy a pattern at all? No, the free ones are complete patterns. Paid patterns give you a wider range of projects and each comes with a full build video.
How long does a first wallet take? An evening or two. A flat cap is a weekend.
Is leather the expensive part? Not at this size. A wallet uses less than half a square foot. Leather becomes the main cost when you move to bags and backpacks.
